Tanner Fountain, Harvard University
Landscape Architect: the SWA Group
Project designers: Lisa Roth, Pete Walker
Location: Cambridge, MA
Description:  The team sited the fountain just outside Harvard Yard in an area in need of a focal point. It was the first mist fountain, which offers the advantage of avoiding an empty basin in winter. The circle of granite boulders randomly runs across pre-existing paving and lawn.  It is a study in contrasts and contradictions: natural boulders in geometric formation, the solidity of stone dissolving in mist. The fountain draws people in to sit, read and socialize.
This seminal design was awarded the Landmark Award by the American Society of Landscape Architects.
